The little boys and I snuck off for a little adventuring in Port Townsend this week. It's their mid winter break and just so happened to be my birthday too. A last minute cabin was available at our favorite vacation spot and off we went! The day we arrived was cold and windy but the boys wanted to check out the beach anyway.
They aren't sad here, just looking for sand dollars. |
When I ask Nolan to take a picture with Miles he must hear choke your brother! |
Here is Nolan "sun bathing" (in his winter coat).
The next day we woke up to blue skies! We decided to explore the cabin property a bit.
The picturesque tree swing. |
The view. |
Spanish Moss? It hangs from the trees there, Nolan wasn't so sure. |
This one thought it was noodles. |
Isn't it pretty? It's like being transported to the South just 2 hours from home! |
Miles discovered his love of tetherball. |
More swinging. |
Then it was off to explore a new park. Now it's not actually new but it's new to all of us...which is amazing. I thought I knew every inch of Port Townsend! But this park has been around forever, just hidden away.
There are trees to climb. Nolan liked this one because it was cut down but still grew.
Our favorite part was the beach. My family, can you tell what's behind him?
It's the campgrounds! I'm not brave enough to camp alone with the kids so we opted for a cabin, with walls, cooking devices and heat. |
The ice cream ferry making an appearance in this one! |
I noticed a lot of the beaches had been damaged this winter. I don't know what this one used to look like but I can tell a huge wall was damaged, it washed away a large piece of the cliff and all these trees came down with it. Nolan went up to each one and hugged it, thanking it for making air for us. I have a picture of that on my phone so stay tuned!
The roots and debris made for some great exploring though, the kids could fit into the little nooks and had a blast there most of the day.
Here is where you can see the giant chunks of clay that fell off the cliff.
Miles was obsessed with this stuff, I couldn't pull him away! Every few minutes he would tell me "Look mom, I'm breaking the rocks!"
While Miles was content breaking rocks Nolan wanted a photo shoot. Take my picture like this mom!
Finally hunger pulled them away from the beach so we headed back for the car. But had to detour for a quick walk through this love tunnel. I want to come back in the spring to see this all in bloom, I bet it's amazing.
We had a great time, although having 2 kids and one parent on vacation has it's challenges. The boys burned through all the clothes I packed for them by the middle of the second day (and I way over packed). I somehow left my bag of clothes and necessities at home so I had one set of clothes for the entire trip and I quickly learned that while on vacation they think safety rules don't apply to them. I can't say I'd do again any time soon but overall it was a memorable trip.
It helps that we were in Port Townsend which is like my second home after spending so many summers there growing up. I love that it hasn't changed at all and that my boys are developing their own bond with this place as well.
